Naribuya Joy left King’s Primary School in November 2010, after sitting her exams for entry into secondary school. King’s is a private primary school, but to go on to further education into a government school, everyone has to pass an entry exam.
Joy, along with two other pupils, Edith and Domiano, passed as a Division One pupil. This was the best result in the whole area and the lowest pupil in our school did better then the best pupil in all the surrounding schools.
Edith’s mother died during the exams and despite her grief, Edith was persuaded by her teachers to continue with the exams. She also excelled.
There was now a challenge for these two girls to continue their education. Coming from a very poor region of Uganda, where girls can be married off at a young age to bring a dowry to the family, it was imperative to get sponsorship for them to be able to carry on with their education.

Some of my friends came to the rescue. Carole decided to sponsor Joy and Aimee and her mother Cherille decided to sponsor Edith. The two girls are now in a good high school in Mbale town where our Ugnadan co-ordinator, Sarah, lives. They have accommodation at a hostel overseen by the school and are fed and looked after very well there. They have just completed their first year.
It was difficult for them to adapt to town life at first and often got lost in town, going from  their school to the hostel. Also, they had never been in a storied building before and were afraid to go upstairs to one of their classrooms, because it didn’t look safe to them!! They are now very much at home in Mbale and go home to the village for their holidays.
Carole and Aimee visited them and met them for the first time in July 2011 and took them clothes and many essentials.
